    Civil War Image--Thought?

    A recent acquisition. Although I have entitled this image "Confederate Volunteer", I have no idea if this is a civilian/military or Confederate/Federal Soldier. I post it here for your information and comments. The reverse of the image is unmarked.

    Some interesting features:
    1.) The angle of the coat's collar points. It also doesn't seem to have an visible trimming;
    2.) The pinky ring;
    3.) The lock of hair inside the frame;
    4.) He's missing ever other (alternating) coat button.

    Just goes to show you that you should never overlook the pile of old photos in your local "junk" store.

    Thanks!

    I would theorize that the lock of hair was his and included with the image as a keepsake. I would give it a 50/50 chance of being added after his death.

    Hi,

    The jacket looks like it has a really tall collar, and the button holes are really long. Cool picture, thanks for posting it.

    “Simply a slaughter. It was really sickening to see those brave fellows struggling up that valley. Our infantry did not return their rammers as usual, after loading, but stuck them in the ground and snatched them up when wanted, to save time. No troops could stand such a concentrated fire long”
