As I recall, W & L had their science labs looted, anatomy skeletons, stuffed birds, microscopes, books, etc.

VMI had its library collections dismantled, which on the surface may not sound so bad, but I believe the library was in the top five in our fledgling country at the time. Hundreds of important works, most brought over from Europe, 1st editions, all the great masters of science and literature. Truly a resource for the pursuit of knowledge.

They said you could follow the army from Lexington to Lynchburg by the scores of discarded books that lay upon the roadside. Thrown there by the Union soldiers who realized the books were either 1) too heavy to carry any further or 2) figured out that they couldn't read them or 3) figured out if they could read them- they wouldn't understand them.

There are scores of old timers in this region that still curse Hunter's name, the book looting being one of the more benign examples of that week of terror.
