"Gleanings" from the Nashville CW Show

Gents,

The following are some artifacts I photographed from the Nasville CW show last weekend. In the next day or so I will try to post some uniforms and trouser's photos in another section of the Forum as I do not think they would be appropriate to the Cavalry Forum.


1. & 2. A nice pin fire pistol, holster etc. from a member of the 4th Texas Cavalry. The description tells the tale on this one.

Here’s a few more.....



1. Pair of Civilian pattern saddle bags. Likely post war origins but the patterns were similar throughout the period. Tenn. Ag. Museum

2. IBID (see #3 above)

3. Interesting McClellan officer’s saddle with smooth seat.

4. Grimsley saddle very similar to Grant’s saddle.

5. Early Dragoon or officer’s stirrups. They wanted $900 for this “one”!

Others may be thinking it, but I'll say it....

I believe that is the ugliest holster I've ever seen!

Mr Knopp - Very interesting and thanks for posting the picture. I'm keen to know if there is a way of getting such a photo of the holster's back side and measurements. Of course, this may be asking too much and I'm pleased just to see what you were able to get.

I'm in agreement with the good Mssr Craddock in that the holster pictured isn't exactly a noble looking piece. However, would be fun to try to reproduce methinks.

Mr, Schultz, I am sorry to report that I did not measure it. The owners were most considerate and I suppose I could have if I had asked. However, in the frenzy to find, photograph and sometimes purchase as much as I can in the (very short) allotted time of the show I often neglect to properly examine the pieces as I should. Sadly, I did not get their names either. The leather was light weight but I did not get a chance to examine the rear of it (sorry, but probablly the standard belt loop). As for the over all size you might try "guessing" from the size of the pistol if you can get your hands on one.
There is just so much to see, people to talk to and business to be conducted at this show. I have been going there since it started some 20+ years ago. For nineteen years I had a table for selling and displays but found I missed too much. Often one finds a great artifact and by the time I would get around to getting back to photograph it - it would be gone! So now, I get there about noon on Friday and leave about noon on Sunday and it is a dead-run the whole time.
GREAT CW show, the largest in the country, if any of you folks care to make it. Next year it will be in Franklin as they are tearing down the old State Fair Grounds. The Fair has been there 100+ plus years but some folks there think it is progress to destroy the great tradition of this fair for another office park. Such as it is.
Anyway, The show producer, Mike Kent is working with the city of Franklin to make this a week long CW extravaganza starting with the anniversary of the Battle of Franklin and ending with the CW show. Some great things are in the works so expect some really neat things to happen! Cudos to the city of Franklin for their foresight (or at least their reasoned ability to see the great potential for a lot of tax dollars).

Hate to see the fairgrounds go. We use to go to the flea mkt. every year there almost 30 years ago. Nothing but antiques back then. The CW show over 15 years. I think attendance was really down this year...
