    Re: Illinois Soldiers?

Here's JW Hamilton of the 63rd Ohio sporting a 17th Army Corps badge and an Army of Georgia badge. This is one of the latest offerings on Ebay

I'd like to know who the enterprising fellow was that was selling these AofG badges, he must have really cashed in with the veterans! I love the modified Fatigue Blouse with the exterior opening for the breast pocket! First time I've seen this badge AND a Corps badge.

    31st Ill Inf.

Thought the image rang a bell; it was published in the 'History 31st Regiment Illinois Volunteers Organized by John A. Logan" - Morris, Hartwell and Kuykendall, 1902. Reprinted 'round 1991.

The book's version of the image is pretty small, like about 2 1/2 inches across by 2 inches deep. (Don't ask me!) It is simply ID'd as 'Group of Soldiers, Co. G." The eBay version is cropped a little on the viewer's left, but nothing really is lost in the cropping.

There is another image of 8 officers (aptly titled Group of Officers) and one orderly (?) It has a backdrop but the floor appears to be grass. They are posed with their mess kits; the orderly is serving coffee. The orderly and at least two officers seem to be wearing a similar badge.

Also, the book features another (solo) image of an ID'D 31st soldier (McKaney, Co. C). While reproducation is really poor, it looks like he is wearing a cut-down fatigue coat.

    By the by,
    John Pillers

    P.S.
Thanks for the info on the medal and all those who shared images/items.

    Classic Illinois image.

I'll let others comment on the badges.

All that work to convert his sack coat and he could't get his chevrons completely sewn on! These modifications seem to show up with Illinois troops.
A private collector here in Oshkosh recently turned up one of these badges on ebay. He thought it was GAR and brought it in for me to identify. Why can't I ever turn one up?!
