Tater,
The Civilian Companion had several pictures a few months back. I`ll have to look up the issue for you.

look in the foreground of this Camp Douglas photo. The VRC guards have several spectacular fur hats! You can zoom in quite a bit with the controls on the right side.

Have you tried the search feature? There was a discussion about this very thing, fur hats. I believe Scott Cross had several photos of frontiersmen wearing "pillbox" style fur hats with and without brimms. They were mostly from up in his neck of the woods. eg. Iowa, Nebraska, Wis, Minn, Illinois, etc

Was Gen Sherman's response upon hearing the capture and execution of 3 reporters who had followed from Atlanta, by the rebels.
The execution part turned out to be false. Dagg Nabbit!
I've used the search function, and that's the only image I came up with (And the discussion was limited)

search the NC museum of History, there was a brown cordroy hat made for him that is there. Its has ear flaps, not the kind of hat your looking for though. I belive it is in the EOG CS equipment too.

I have an original mid-19th century fur cap of the classic style in my collection. Check out my photo album of original clothing on my profile for pictures of it. If you're interested in any further details contact me via PM.

Here's the photo Prodical Reb mentioned yesterday, backmarked Muscatine, Iowa, tax stamp cancelled January 1865.
Hope this helps,
Merry Christmas, too!
