Vicksburg Sharp Shooter (VSS) Two piece tongue and wreath

    Hi,
I am new to this forum, but from what I can tell there is a lot of good information on here. I was wondering if any one out there has come across any photos of soldiers of the12th Miss Regt Company G and or Co E Vicksburg Sharpshooters raised in Warren County, Mississippi.

The reason I am interested in the 12th Miss Regt is they were part of the Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee and were camped for the winter of 1863-1864 near were I currently live. I am an avid Relic Hunter and last Saturday recovered and very fine example of a VSS two piece waist belt buckle, according to some civil war researchers these buckles were associated with the Vicksburg Sharpshooters but have no solid evidence to support this as only a few examples have been recovered. The examples that were recovered around 10 or 11 were also found with other items associated with Mississippi troops i.e. Mississippi button.

I would appreciate any information that might be able to tie this VSS buckle to the 12th Miss. I do appreciate your time in this matter.

If this is not the spot to post this please let me know. Once I learn how to post pictures I will enclose several for your review.

I know that a VSS two piece buckle was found in VA about 3 weeks ago by a relic hunter. I have no idea as to exactly where it was found. The fellow that found it posted the picture on "My Treasure Spot" website.

I think the owner of the White Oak Museum, just outside of Fredericksburg, VA has one on exhibit that he found years ago. I think there was an article in North South Trader years back that the owner showed along with the two-piece buckle. I don't know the date of the issue, but you might search their back issues.

Frank: There was an excellent article on this buckle (you are correct about its origin) by Mike O' Donnell in the Jan/Feb 1997 issue of North/South Trader (Vol. XXIV No. 1). You can order a back issue from them or PM me your address I'll gladly send you a photocopy. And as far as finding such a buckle . . . well, damn . . . the find of a lifetime. Congrats!

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana
