History of Scott Township, Mahaska County

While the author served in Company B, 3rd Iowa Infantry, this work offers a very detailed of life in the county prior to the war, as well as some great information about life on the Des Moines River for those people serving in companies identified along it's course. Navigation of the river, or lack thereof, was a major legal sticking point throughout the 1840s and 1850s, eventually ending in the Supreme Court.
