Only in Kentucky. Probably some of the members of the state legislature have antique/curios shops and want the plunder to sell at a high profit.

For those who haven't heard, the bill failed to get past the House committee.

Had to get a vote so that they could watch the NCAA. Senate Preident even cancelled one day so he could go to the game and the Gov & Lt. Gov are in New Orleans for the games. Tells you where the priorities are in Kentucky.

Re: Metal detecting in Kentucky State Parks

Just a quick update. The bill failed to get a reading in the Ky House of Rep. Several state legislators put up strong support AGAINST the bill. After several conversations I think they now fully understand the federal legislative protection that applies to Perryville and any other battlefield that has received federal funding. Funamentally, I do not think they really thought about the historic sites - I think they envisioned people walking down the beach at Ft. Boonesborough and digging up coins etc.
I believe they have a better understanding now about the importance of the archeological resources not just at Perryville but Kentucky's other historic sites.
However, saying that - this bill will be back again during the next legislative session. If you are a Kentuckian please be vigiliant. I encourage you all to get on Preservation Kentucky's list serve and join the Friends of Perryville Facebook page and organization.
It was the quick action of both private individuals and dedicated people that work at the historic sites - especially here at Pville - we probably pushed it a little too far, but so be it..... - that got this thing killed.
You are reenactors are a powerful voice - please use it for good!
    Thanks,
