QM and Ordnance Records of 9th Texas Cavalry

Some good early war Texas Cavalry information. Not much after the fall of 1862 is listed except of for a large shipment of saddles in June 1863. The regiment was dismounted for a time then remounted in 1862. Some interesting things in here include some "Pea Coats" issued, along with more Lowell's cloth for making their own tents.

Re: QM and Ordnance Records of 9th Texas Cavalry

The Lowell's cloth is again interesting as are the "pea" jackets you note....I note the 300 knapsacks in April 1862.....for cavalry!! While I have seen this in the records before- it is rare. One can wonder if this was in lieu of saddle bags which were issued in abundance from Memphis. Still, it would make an interesting but authentic spectacle to see in practice at a reenactment- don't you think?

Re: QM and Ordnance Records of 9th Texas Cavalry

    Ken,

The interesting thing is that this regiment (like all in the Whitfield/Ross Brigade) was dismounted for about 6 months in 1862, they fought at Iuka and Corinth as infantry and were remounted shortly after that. So the knapsacks make sense, but I wonder if they kept them after they remounted.....

Don't have any clues about the Pea Jackets, donated civilian? C.S. Navy stocks? There was a C.S. navy base at Greenwood MS, on the Yazoo river not too far from where the 9th spent a good bit of their time.

What is "Lowell's cloth?" Any connection to the huge textile operation in Lowell, MA in that era??

Lowell's Cloth is apparently a generic term named for cheap cotton cloth, and you're correct, it's named after the goods made up in Massachusetts. It doesn't have to be made there, just made in the style. It was a common cloth to make clothing for blacks and poor whites in the deep south well into the 20th Century.

Any speculation on how they would have made the Lowell's Cloth waterproof for tentage? There is a wealth of good information here, maybe more than some of the other units considering the detail spent on camp equipment.

Forgive the Historic Greenhorn here. In reference to the 'B&B cartridge', is that refering to a BB (I.E. Shotgun round) or a completely different round used during the War such as the Minnie or the round ball. Thanks!

It is a Buck and Ball cartridge. Which was buckshot and a round ball packed in the same cartridge tube.
