    Marmaduke's Raid, April 4 - 7, 2013

This is advance notice of an event that will take place in southeastern Missouri next April. Marmaduke's Raid will be a total-immersion, "no modern objects, no modern talk" reenactment of the Raid that took place near Patterson, Missouri, in 1863. The event will take place on private and public land, in a steep, beautiful little valley near a lake. There will be no amenities of any kind (not even portapotties) and participants will probably have to be in good shape to negotiate the rocky hillsides. This is an opportunity to experience history as it was really lived, in a beautiful secluded wooded area.

We're looking for about twelve men, women, and children who are up for a physical challenge. For those of you who remember the first "Marmy's," you know that there will be a wide variety of people traversing those hillsides -- deserters, bushwhackers, refugees, military of both sides, State Guard, Enrolled Militia, cavalry, Mossbacks (men hiding from enforced enrollment) and travelers of all kinds.

If you're interested, please join the new google list (yes, ahem, I know it's misspelled ) and follow the discussions on the facebook group.

An event web site is being constructed and will be posted as soon as it goes live.

    Re: Marmaduke's Raid, April 4 - 7, 2013

I wanted to add three quick points regarding the event discussions and planning.

First of all, a lot of the civilians who participate in Trans-Mississippi and middle-western events are not on facebook. Therefore, all of the civilian discussions and planning will take place on the google list and here on the AC forum. That way no one will miss anything important. I'll make sure that if anything vital is posted on FB I'll also post it here.

Second, currently we're deep in the planning for the May event at Independence village. After that event is over, we'll get into Marmy planning.

Third, I just want to reiterate that the event terrain does pose some challenges. In order to get down into the event site, you'll have to be able to climb down a steep, rocky hillside. That means that everything you need for your comfort & survival will have to be carried in on your back. This includes bedding, food, and clothing. That means we have to sleep on the ground and probably eat uncooked food. You won't want a campfire in a valley that is home to deserters, military of both sides, bushwhackers, and the like.

There's no privacy; = you'll have to sleep in your clothes for the duration. No portapotties: = pee in the woods. No down time from immersion; = first person from the moment the event goes live until it ends. That said: you'll be camping in a beautiful historic valley and traveling on an unpaved county road that has existed since before the Civil War, and meeting up with a wildly unpredictable array of characters.

Just a quick update for now. Frank Aufmuth has agreed to raise the civilian participation to twenty-four. That includes men, women, and children.

However, armed non-military men such as deserters, bushwhackers, lay-outs, Mossbacks, and assorted ne'er-do-wells (you know who you are) should register on the military side. If that becomes confusing by all means contact Frank, Eric Fair, Patrick McAllister, and Mike Comer. In any case, all are welcome to sign on to the civilian google list. That would be a good way to stay informed about start times, guidelines, terrain issues, and the like. Don't worry, we'll get you sorted.
