Not War time history but US history from the War Year

Not War time history but US history from the War Years......

As we dive head long into the 150th, something else turns 150 next month. The Homestead Act

    http://www.omaha.com/article/2012042...ed-in-nebraska

The Homestead Act of 1862, enacted during the Civil War, provided that any adult who had never borne arms against the U.S. government could claim 160 acres of undeveloped federal land west of the Mississippi River.

Claimants generally were required to “improve” the plot by building a dwelling and cultivating the land. After five years, the original filer was entitled to the property at no cost except a small registration fee.

After the Civil War, Union soldiers could deduct the time they had served from the residency requirements.

    Thanks for the link!
Friends may also want to Google search the NPS Homestead National Monument for a list of activities for this summer and fall. There are some opportunities for civilian living historians.
    Cheers,

P.S. -- Huck, would you consider a car pool to Antietam and/or Perryville?

This is also the sesquicentennial of the creation of the Department of Agriculture, as well as the adoption of the Morrill Act, establishing the land-grant system for colleges designed to make higher education more accessible to the children of America's farmers and mechanics. We can thank secession for the passage of some of the most important agricultural reforms in our nation's history.
