Masons in the Line

Mr Hicks,

I noticed in a few previous posts about what good things Masons do, you noted all the hospital charities.

My younger brother spent alot of time and surgeries in Shriners Children's Hospital in San Francisco... they did wonders for a kid who wasnt supposed to walk and now manages his own Downhill Bike team.

My newborn son (1/25/08) was just released from Children's Hospital at Scottish Rite in Atlanta, routine jaundice, but the care they took of him and his Momma made me trust doctors and hospitals again.

Union General Mahlon Manson was a member of Crawfordsville (now Montgomery) Lodge #50.

Lew Wallace was raised in Fountain and became a member of C-ville #50 after his marriage to Susan Elston.

One book is about a modern man's search for 'lost' Confederate gold, which led him to discovering a lot about the role of Masons in the WBTS. The book is titled "Rebel Gold", by Warren Getler and Bob Brewer.

In Southeast Texas, a few reenactors have the Masonic symbol sewn on their jacket.

Usually at the big annual Gettysburg reenactment lodge is held in a field, and the event is advertised around town on flyers in stores, such as the store The Regimental Quartermaster. Member(s) of the Gettysburg lodge apply to the state's grand lodge for permission and the meeting is held under the authority of the constitution of the town's lodge. All Freemasons in good standing are invited to attend.

It took me many years to figure out that anyone that wishes to join the Freemasons can apply for membership by looking in their local phone book and contacting their local lodge's secretary for an application. There is a saying in our state, "If you want to be one, ask one", that means ask for an application.

I have a silver emblem sewn on the inside of my jacket, out of sight. I was not feeling well at the *big* Gettysburg event a couple of years back, and could not find my friends that I came to meet, and needed a place to lay down. I turned the side of the jacket inside out and put it over my arm hoping to hook up with someone who would let me lay somewhere near their camp, outside as I am not picky. That night at the meeting I was told by several people/groups, and here I am paraphrasing, "yes we saw your emblem as we were walking by." I guess the cabletow was short that day.

Well....I thought once again we should start this wheel a turnin.

I am very happy to say that after raising my father three years ago who is now very active in our lodge that three weeks ago I was very pleased to help conduct my grandfather(mom's dad) through his EA . It was my dad's father that made me want to join and here I am helping my other Pa become a Brother. It's weird how the Craft works sometimes. Many Brothers who know me well...Pat, Hicks and a few others know how much my grandfather made a difference in my life giving me the hand in fellowship before he passed 7 years back. So I thought it was worth telling this story and I hope that this will help other Brothers get their family and friends on the right path too.

I know some of you have seen this but...what can I say! One of my fellow GA boys!!

Nothing to do with freemasonry, the general discussion, nor whether the "Morgan Affair" story is true or false; just a small correction in geography. The river near the falls is actually the Niagara River, the St Lawrence is on the other end of Lake Ontario.

the British Army of the period had many "travelling lodges", which were embodied in their regiments, some of which were garrisoned here in Australia.

Freemasonary remains quite strong in our defence force, when I was raised I recall the immediate surprise at seeing my commanding officer, second in command and a number of others from my unit at the time.

There's at least one Napoleonic reenactment group over here who conduct a period lodge meeting occaisonaly, but only if a master or past master of a current lodge can take the chair.

First of all Congrats on being raised. I along with thousands of others welcome you to the Craft. I have taken the lead of Brothers Hicks and Craddock, they should be able to coach you in the proper wearing of the tokens. From a Modern Military perspective, which I am very sure went along with the period wearing of tokens...as long as it does not stand out, and interferes with the mission. But check with those I mentioned. Best of luck.
