"Who wouldn't gladly risk his life in arduous service on the Texas coast? Show me the man who wouldn't, and I'll shoot him. But, alas, a stern and unaccomodating fate denies the crown to my ambition that such a service would be; it is only here in Virginia I may hope to win laurels." --Joseph B. Polley, Letters to Charming Nellie
Awesome picture! I'm trying to grow my beard out like that guy![]()

Actually Dags are in a class unto themselves apart from ambrotypes, salt prints, CDVs, etc. They do fetch some unreal prices (to you and me, to others chump change). I think a recent auction of an outdoor dag of San Fran ca. 1850 went for $40,000.
Dags are more accepted as an art form and are highly prized by the art world, hence the high prices. You might as well get used to it.

The brave respect the brave. The brave
Respect the dead; but you -- you draw
That ancient blade, the ass's jaw,
And shake it o'er a hero's grave.
