A feast of interesting detail...the odd artillery jackets, the light artillery belt on the man seated on the ordinance rifle's trail, the initialled canteen, the Enfield, cooking gear, Confederate 'shebang' construction.... But what arrested me was the distinctive little round-billed cap on the man sitting on the limber chest, the fellow who has tied a scarf under his arm for some reason. I acquired an identical cap in Barnstable, Mass., circa 1957. It has a whalebone stiffener going up the back, is obviously private purchase, and I can't recall seeing another photo of one being worn during the war, tho' drawings illustrating it by Homer and others are not uncommon. Cap cost me $8.50, by the bye. Times ain't now like they used to was!

      Hallo!

We had discussed that image in the past.

However, being "detail rich," I seem to find something new each time I see it.
Like the cavalry sabre on the chest. ;)

I don't know about everyone else, but it is quite interesting to study the litter scattered about on the ground. The place is in good need of policing. The Enfield bayonet used in the fireplace chimney will just add more to the aurgument that soldiers found better things to do with their bayonets than its intended martial use. Just when you think you have put Turner Kirkland's statement about no documented cases of battle deaths by bayonet to rest, something like this shows up...

Notice the cup hanging from the haversack closure strap in the extreme left of the picture.
