I am wondering about how common it is for Union soldiers to have canteens without covers. My first research stop was looking at some Union photographs and the canteens appeared to be by and large covered in what I saw. Then I stumbled across an article here discussing Confederates using Union canteens and those appeared to be mostly uncovered. So really this is sort of a two part question. How common was it for a Union soldier to have an uncovered canteen and if it was not common, why are there a number of Confederates running around with uncovered Union canteens?
