Lincoln General Hospital photos

The original Lincoln General Hospital photos are being scanned and made available online by staff of the National Museum of Health and Medicine (F/K/A Army Medical Museum). A few photos of captured Confederates are part of the most recent batch of uploads. Many other unpublished images of military medical interest the DoD retains from the Civil War to today are included on the page as well.

That is some gruesome-ly awesome stuff.

Some of you all attened and may even remeber the event that the Columbia Rifles put on at Glendale, Virginia in 2008.

The Federal unit being portrayed was the 4th PRC. Dave "Grumpy" Towson was the Captain of the Co. H, and wsa portying Captain Gates.

In the action on June 30th, 1862 at the battle of Glendale, the 4th PRC gallently threw themselves into the fray agianst the 47th VA. Unbeknownst to them, they were taking casualties due to short artillery rounds from their own artillery, whom the 4th was supposed to be supporting.
Well, one the men who fell wounded was the Captain of Co. H, E.B. Gates. Here is the results of his wound:

It is rare that you ever see the actual photo of a man you portray, let alone one who gave so much.

Those are difficult photos to look at, especially those of facial wounds. It's a great resource none the less. ~Gary

Check out the book "Shooting Soldiers: Civil War Medical Photography By R.B. Bontecou" published by Stanley B. Burns, MD. Dr. Burns maintains a massive collection of original photographs and an online stock photography catalog.
