  • Type of sack cloth & corresponding social class

Im planning on buying 2 sack coats, each are going to likely be for 2 people of very different social standings. So, that being said, I was curious in what order the cloth of mens coats (of the 1850's) were made of, as a general rule, from highest price/for the wealthy to Average class to lower priced/worn by the poor?
Would it have been something like satinettes, broadcloths, ... then next linen, then jean wool last? And remember, in general.
And any past AC articles on this if you know of any.
    Thanks.

    Hi Patrick,

I'm buying my Sack Coat from John Wedeward (he only makes sack coats). I called him a few days ago and we spoke for two hours about sack coats and other CW stuff. He might be you best source. Here is the link for his website http://www.cwquartermaster.com/index.htm. The website has a lot of photos of both his coats and originals.

    Hope his helps.

      Thanks Roberto,

I'm glad you reminded me of John, it's been a while since I've been on his website. I also think just Federal uniforms when it comes to Wedeward. I forgot all about his knowledge of non-military clothing. I'll talk with him.
