  • Any Information on Which Rifles the 10th Illinois Carried?

    Hi all,

I've been trying to do some research of my own to understand which muskets Illinois regiments used. So far I've seen that most were issues Enfields, with a few being issued new Springfields. I've consulted a few documents I found online regarding the 10th Illinois, such as the Illinois Adjunct General's Report but was unable to find which rifle the 10th carried. Does anyone have any information on this? I'm not sure if they carried 1861 Springfields, 1842 Springfield smoothbores, or 1853 Enfields. I'd like to know as to start developing a more accurate impression.

    Thank you!

    Dear Coffee Cooler,

    This form Captain WInter:
So Dave here is what I have for 10th Illinois infantry weapons from an original report from November 26 1861

    Company A:90 Enfield Rifled muskets
Company B 85 Minnie Rifles , Saber bayonets
    Company C 52 U.S. Percussion muskets 1st class(1842s) 34 Altered muskets 2nd class
Company D, E, G, H, I, K Enfield Contract Muskets (All condemned by board of survey)

Most of the condemned muskets were replaced with Enfield Rifled Muskets by 1862

Sorry if this is a necro post, I bought a copy of “Arming the Suckers” by Ken Baumann. It’s a treasure trove of information on arms issues to Illinois Regiments.

“November 30,1862 ‘The enfield rifled musket with which the regiment is primarily armed are defective in several particulars. More especially however is the locks which in many cases too weak to snap caps’.” Field and Staff Books, Illinois State Archives
