A Federal Living History hosted by the Independent Rifles. May 1-3, 2020. We will be portraying one company of the 125th Ohio as they garrison the town of Franklin in Spring and Early summer of 1863.

So up next after “Defending the Heartland” will be “For God and the Right: 1863”. The event focuses on Opdyke’s men in the 125th Ohio as they occupy Franklin during the Spring and Summer of 1863, shortly after the Emancipation Proclamation. Slavery and the opinions of soldiers and citizens will be heavily talked about during this weekend, as the Federal Army was inundated with freed men and women of color that the Army either didn’t want or didn’t know what to do with. Yes, this is a controversial topic in American History. No, it will not be the focus of the whole weekend. We will use this time together to do as the soldiers did, drill, do parade, fight boredom and we will do it on the grounds of the Carter House, which is great in the story of this regiment but also rich with history and the opinions of slavery and how it impacted this conflict as well.

More exciting than that- I’m pleased to announce that Mr. Baker Watkins will be serving as Captain for the weekend, while myself, Brad Willingham, Brian DesRochers and Justin Morris just sit back and cook! Registration (when it opens) will be limited to 100 guys, and we will let attrition decide the size of the event after that. Each man will be required to have a shelter half!
