    1862 diary of O.H. Scudder of the 89th Illinois Infantry, Company E. Lot also includes two railroad passes and a military meal pass. Diary discusses Scudder's enlistment, basic military procedures, encounters with Confederate troops and references to John Morgan's raid. Entries regarding Scudder's enrollment include 7 August, ''ÖEnlisted for three years unless sooner dischargedÖ''; 11 August, ''ÖSworn in todayÖ''; and 3 September, ''ÖCamp Williams all forenoon. 89th Regiment was presented with a flag this PMÖ'' Multiple entries regarding rebel encounters read in part: 7 September, ''ÖCamp Manchester, Louisville. Church forenoon. Gurilla Morgan burnt a bridge on the Louisville and Nashville road todayÖ''; 8 September, ''ÖCamp Manchester. The 74th Indiana captured the gurilla Morganís band to day, 800 menÖ''; 21 September, ''ÖOur company out on pickett, the Rebels within three miles of usÖ''; 12 October, ''ÖIn hospitalÖJim McCall left for the barracks to night. There was about 200 secesh prisoners brot in today. Went to a nigger wedding at the churchÖ'' Memoranda section of diary lists recipes, including: ''Öfor dropsy. Jamaica Rum 1 quart, Wormwood ? pound. Take one table spoonful twice a dayÖ'' and ''ÖHemorage of the lungs. 1 charge of gun powder. Sweetneed with sugar and water. Take internallyÖ'' Front section of dairy from 1 January to 7 August includes pre-enlistment entries concerning railroad employment and social obligations. O.H. Scudder enlisted in August 1862. The 89th Illinois Infantry was engaged at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Columbia and Nashville. Lot also includes a bright orange military meal ticket, signed on verso by Scudder and the Chief Steward, and two railroad passes used by Scudder in 1865: one from Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, the other from Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. Pencil diary measures 4'' x 6''. Pages show slight toning, otherwise near fine condition.
