      Joey,

I saw a straight truck from Jasper, Indiana, in Hagerstown the other day, and thought about asking him how to pronounce the county name the way the locals do it. Some places it would be "dew boys" others "dew bwah" and others "dew bose." It could be any of the above, or none of the above.

Don't expect me to cook another pig...but you never know.

        Charles,
Here's what I found on the pronunciation of "DuBois", American-style:

"In the United States, the French Du Bois, while retaining its old spelling, has dropped du bwa in favor of an Americanized sound. A verse in a clever poem written for the DuBois Family Association reminds us of the New World pronunciation:

‘Tis no longer du Bwa as so many suppose
And it is not Du Boys, and of course not Du Boze
Du Boy is not right, nor is Du’Bois correct,
For the accent is not where some people suspect
Please read this out loud so the sound of your voice
By this rhythm records that our name is Du Bois"

        -Source=http://oldunclecrow.wordpress.com/2007/11/05/name-pronunciation-lists/

        -Joey

PS Attached is a photo of Miss Piggy preparing to give her all for the Union at Spangler's Spring last year, helped along her sacrificial way by Charles Heath. The pig fed about 40 people and it was pronounced by many to be the best, most tender, roast pig they ever ate! Sad to say (or happily for the pig-loving crowd) this year's menu is featuring a critter of the bovine family :)

Charles, you are close to the Hoosier pronunciation with the "dew boys". It comes out more like "dooboys." It kind of flows all together. I thought maybe it was just me that said it like that. I'm working at the F.D. today and went into the kitchen and asked the guys; "what county is Jasper in?" I recieved ten "dooboys" Ya just have to get that Hooosier draw down!:D

            Boozie,

Then "dooboys" it is! I suspect the original cast of Co. K, 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry would have had their own peculiar accents, as they were, well, golly...yet another "Dutch Kompany."

                      Hello,
I would LOVE to go! Haven't been to G'burg in at least 2 yrs. I really wouldn't want to drive by myself though...anyone from Central Indiana going that has room in their wagon(I'm in Muncie)? I'd gladly pay gas money. Send me a PM.

Clayton, why just today Bill Young (metro Indianapolis) mentioned he would like to attend. Might want to look him up for a potential carpool partner. He can entertain you with some "TANBS" Sea Stories.

Neil Randolph is cooking. I'm just watching the water boil as usual.

They pronounce it Daboys (the ending sound is a pronounced S not a Z) around here. This is the part of Indiana where they talk like Kentuckians.

                            Clark,

The historical society has some interesting artifacts worth checking out; however, my April-June schedule filled up so fast that I'm not going to be able make the jaunt out there to see what they have. I still think it is nice the local folks remember these fellows.
