  • With Pick & Spade - 2010 Update #7 - Event T-7 days Reminders

The below reminders went out on the event listserv, but I wanted to post it here in case some of the participants have not yet registered for the listserv.

    Gentlemen,

It is the week before With Pick & Spade 2010! Those of us on the committee have been looking forward to this event for over a year, and we are finally here. Here are a few reminders to keep in mind prior to your departure and arrival at Petersburg National Battlefield:

Arrival Time - The event will go live at 9:00PM on Friday Night. Please make your travel arrangements accordingly, so that you can arrive and be registered by 8:45PM. Please consult the website's page entitled Maps & Directions for instructions if you have obligations that will prevent you from arriving before dark or after the event goes live. We of course encourage everyone who can to be on-site and registered by 8:45PM.

Sunday - The event is tentatively scheduled to end on Sunday afternoon around Noon.

Registration - Registration will be located at the Park Operations Center located between Tour Stop #4 (Harrison's Creek) and Tour Stop #5 (Fort Steadman). This means that you will drive past the event site at Tour Stop #3. Do not pull into the visitor parking spaces, but follow the signs to registration and parking. You do not have to pay the entrance fee to the park, but just tell them you are with the living history group for the weekend. Participants will not be allowed into camp until the Company arrives at the campsite on Friday evening. Registration will open at 12:00 Noon on Friday.

Pre-Event Activities - Several activities have been planned for Friday afternoon for participants to take advantage of if you arrive before the event goes live. #1 - You can take the opportunity to visit the park or other museum's around the City of Petersburg (be sure to check websites about open hours before proceeding). #2 - A participant tour of Stop #8 (The Battle of the Crater) will be held at 3PM at Tour Stop #8 (The Crater). #3 - We will organize groups of guys to grab some outstanding NC Style BBQ for dinner at King's BBQ. Groups will begin departing registration at 5PM.

Weapons and Rounds - You DO need to bring your weapon (consult the Impression Guidelines); however, you DO NOT need any rounds or caps. You weapon will be inspected at registration, so make sure it is up to NPS standards for cleanliness and function.

Rations/Food - Joe Caridi of the Columbia Rifles is serving as the Company Cook for the weekend. Rations will be issued to you cooked for each meal. You should come with a 'flat' haversack to this event.

First Person/Interpretation - The main goals of this event involve interpreting a seldom seen life of the Engineer at Petersburg for the public and providing a quality event for you the living historian. So, take advantage of the little moments meant for you, but please engage with the public as appropriate. First person interaction among the participants is encouraged and expected. First Person interaction with the visiting public can be challenging. If you feel you have the skills necessary to pull it off, be sure there is someone at your workstation who can 'float' in and out of First Person to answer questions, etc.

Tent Flies - If you and your pards have a tent fly, please notify the folks at the registration table at check-in. Participants are encouraged to bring a shelter half for use in camp.

Period Photography - Terry Thomann will be on-site on Saturday taking period wet plates of the Company and work stations. These photos will be made available for purchase following the event. NPS rules do not allow for sales or transactions to take place on the battlefield, so be forewarned.

That's all for now. We are excited to join all of you in the trenches at Petersburg on Friday!

    Thanks,
