  • 150th Sailors Creek March 27-29, 2015---121st New York Volunteer Infantry Adjunct

HOST: A collaboration between The Sally Port Mess, The SCLI and The Western Rifles. Primary research materials have been graciously provided by NYSHA.

WHERE: Sailor’s Creek Battlefield, Rice, VA.

PARTICIPANTS: The Original 121st at Sailor’s Creek numbered nearly 300 men. Research indicates that 8 companies were present at the battle. We will look to portray the present for duty numbers of the regiment as closely as possible. The commander of this effort will be William Eichler. Will commanded the 24th Michigan/1st Maryland (U.S.) at BGA Gettysburg. He also will be commanding the Federal battalion at Franklin 150th Anniversary Living History.

WHEN: Friday March 27, to Sunday March 29, 2015.

SCENARIO: This adjunct will portray as closely as possible, the specific actions of the 121st leading up to and at the Battle of Sailor’s Creek. This will include following portions of the original route of the 121st New York and history specific scenarios. In addition the major goal spearheading this effort will be to operate in real time, under the original orders as the 121st New York for the duration of the event. This will include a ration and ammunition issue, setting pickets, and a march into the event (Which advertises its own 4 mile running battle). Each company raised will be asked to provide (as closely as possible) Officers and NCO’s per the roster of the 121st at the time of the battle.

UNIFORM GUIDELINES: A formal set of standards will be announced. “Regulation Federal” will be the guide with emphasis on “Late war” appearance.

HISTORY: Coordination with NYSHA has provided much insight and information into the 121st at War’s end. We have access to Primary Materials that include: Clothing and Equipment return, Company Muster Rolls, an Inspection report and finally The Day/Order Books the 121st New York Volunteer Infantry. In addition, The History of the 121st New York Infantry (Best), numerous diaries and “Upton’s Regulars” (Ciella) round out the bibliography of this effort.

PRESERVATION: A preservation effort is being coordinated and will be announced when finalized.
