  • Federal Battalion Adjunct at Port Republic/Cross Keys, The Bucktails and 110th PA

    Gents,

The Western Rifles will be hosting a battalion adjunct to the upcoming event "Thunder in the Valley," June 10th-12th, 2016 on the original battlefields of Cross Keys and Port Republic. Our overall impression will be Lt Col Kane's four company battalion of the Bucktails / 13th Reserves / 1st Pennsylvania Rifles. They were on detached duty from the Army of the Potomac and part of Baynard's "Flying Brigade" during the campaign, but fought alongside the 8th New York and 27th Pennsylvania at Cross Keys. Also, our research shows this is before they were issued the left over Berdan's modified Sharp's Rifles, so they were still carrying '61 Springfields. After Saturday's fight, we will participate in the 5 mile preservation march from the Cross Keys battlefield over to Port Republic. For Sunday, we will switch to the 110th Pennsylvania for the fight on the coal hill at Port Republic.

Impression: 1st Pennsylvania Rifles, The Bucktails and 110th Pennsylvania. The standards are attached, please adhere to them. This is one of the few battles you can be a Bucktail with a M1855/1861 Springfield. All uniforms to be of proper materials and construction.

    When: 10-12th June, 2016

Where: Cross Keys, VA and Port Republic, VA

Registration will be $35. This will cover the $25 event fee, with the remaining $10 covering rations and everything else the adjunct will put on. There is no need to register seperately with the main event, the adjunct staff will take of that for you! The Registration form is attached, please contact Andy Roscoe at 24thmi@gmail.com with your form.

Company I is for me, it seems, based on this reference to my great grandfather's older brother (who was actually from Cattaraugus County, NY):
"Henry Joshua Hadley -- recruited in McKean County from Ceres Township, took oath of office at Smethport from Col. Kane for a three-year term, age 21, as Corporal, Co. I, McKean County Rifles. He was killed 8 June 1862 at the Battle of Cross Keys. His unit was under the command of Capt. Hugh McDonald; they were detailed to Brig. Gen. Stahel's brigade under Gen. Blenker. These Bucktails were acting in support of Buell's battery (Battery C, Pierpoint Battery, 1st West Virginia Light Artillery, four 3" Parrot guns)."
I will send my registration paperwork and fees for Company I next week.
Thanks so much. It's going to be quite an adventure.
          Onward, you Bucktails!

Do you happen to know when the 13th PA Reserves received their 1859 rifles? I had two relatives in that unit and would like to build the impression, one was wounded at cross keys the other mad it thru the war. Any info would be great. Thanks
