Re: 23rd Tennessee Chickamauga Living History - September 15-17: Hosted by the Governor Guards

I had a chat with park staff the other day and this program is looking to be incredible! Be ready to do some marching and see the battlefield and experience Chickamauga through the eyes of those who were there!

Also note that I made a slight change to the impression guidelines. CS knapsacks are now the preferred over blanket rolls with US knapsacks as a last resort.

As previously stated in the initial posting of this living history, all extra money left over from the registration fee's will be used for preservation. After some discussion with members of the AG who are currently working on this effort, the Governor Guards have decided to aid their cause and help preserve and restore the monuments of Maj. Generals James B. McPherson and William H.T. Walker in Atlanta.

“My skirmishers were now hotly engaged with the enemy at the bank of the river, and I was suffering from the effects of the enemies’ fire, when all at once, without command, the regiment with one accord charged the river and bridge at the double-quick and put the enemy to flight.”

                    - Colonel Richard Keeble

“We had on this day 28 officers and 158 non-commissioned officers and privates, and lost in this charge upon the bridge 5 non-commissioned officers and privates, among whom was the color bearer Pvt. A Melton, wounded in the leg. This brave soldier wept when he had to part with the colors, and said to the one who took them up, “Carry them through the thickest if battle, ahead of everything else.”

Re: 23rd Tennessee Chickamauga Living History - September 15-17: Hosted by the Governor Guards

We will have a total of four programs over the weekend and each one is different. We will cover the action at Reeds Bridge, Viniard Farm, the break through and Horseshoe Ridge.
The only thing that separates our March route from the original 23rds route is just a matter of a few yards difference.
Our bivouc site on Friday and Saturday night is almost exactly were they slept on that cold night of September 19th.
This is going to be epic! The park is really bending over for us to make this a great program not only for the public, but for all of us as well.

Re: 23rd Tennessee Chickamauga Living History - September 15-17: Hosted by the Governor Guards

Folks, I wanted to touch on a few reminders before next weekend.
                        1. As Chris stated we will be parking in Brock field. This is also the same place we will be bivouacking on Friday and Saturday night.

                        2. I will have the participant check-in set up in our parking area. I will open the check-in by 1600 and will go until 2300.

                        3. Everyone MUST be checked in NLT 0500 on Saturday morning.

                        4. I will be raffling off two “Boxes from home” tickets can be purchased at registration only so please bring some cash if you wish to participate in the raffle. Tickets are one for $1.00 or six for $5.00. These boxes will have some pretty nice stuff in them AND you have two chances to win. All proceeds will go towards preservation.

                        5. You will not need any cartridges. Leave them at home.

                        6. We will be using Hardee’s manual.

                        7. The rations that you will be issued will consist of the following. Bacon, cornmeal, sweet potatoes, dried beans, apples and coffee. I fully understand that this ration will require a good deal of prep work, but the intent if for everyone to work as a company to get their meals prepared. It will also require a bit of forethought on how to use it for two days. Not only is this totally doable, but you will have plenty of time to cook Saturday.

                        8. Bring a little food to get you through Friday and a little something to get you started Saturday morning.

                        9. Don’t forget that we will also be holding a silent auction on Saturday evening. Whoever has the winning bid will be able to take their winnings home at the end of the event and can send payment via paypal so you don’t have to carry around a lot of cash.

                        10. Eric Tipton agreed to come out at drive the water truck for us. He will also be going around and taking lots of photos. We will also have likely have one other gentlemen going around to various stops taking photos as well. He was just a random park visitor that we ran into last year and wanted to come back again for this year. I don’t foresee anyone needing to pull out a phone and snap pictures.

Re: 23rd Tennessee Chickamauga Living History - September 15-17: Hosted by the Governor Guards

Another Chickamauga LH is in the books. I would first like to take a few lines to thank all who made this a success. To Chris Barr and Lee White, thank you for permitting us to do this program. Eric Tipton for driving the chase/water truck. Without him, the program would not have been allowed to happen. Herb Coats, thank you for all of your assistance with researching the original cast. Will DeBord, thank you for your generous donation of the Gettysburg blanket for the silent auction and the behind the scenes admin duties. I am truly sorry the green weenie got you over the weekend my friend. Chris Utley, thank you for the donation of the handkerchiefs and fork/knife combo. To my battalion staff, Messer's Cole Adkins and Ivan Ingram, thank you for helping things to run smoothly in the rank and file. Doug Jarrett, thank you for sticking around to guard our camp on Saturday and Sunday. It made things MUCH easier by not needing to load up all the ration boxes and any cooking gear that folks didn't want to carry with them. Lastly, I would like to thank all of those who came out and supported "Underwood's Death March"

In brief conversation with during the weekend we received vary nice remarks from the public about our program. We also managed to raise over $1,400 to go towards the restoration of the General Walker and General McPherson monuments in Atlanta.

                          Now the bad.
A very small number of folks I knew needed to leave early on Sunday, but for some reason we had a VERY high attrition rate. Which I found odd considering the beautiful weather. I'm sorry you had to leave and miss the final program and our assault up Snodgrass Hill. With the exception of a training evolution during the Spanish American War, we were on track to be the largest infantry force to make the charge since September 20th 1863.

Yellow jackets; they apparently do not like it when a battalion marches over their nest. For those of you who were on the receiving end of these little demons, I am truly sorry and hope you have since recovered.

Rations, seems like a terrible waste of time and money to waste them and or not utilize them.
Lastly, whomever it was who decided to leave a pile of empty cans and a cigarette box under their car should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

Thanks again to all. I look forward to working with everyone again.

Had a blast, Tyler! Thanks again.

                            I learned:

                            -Tactically more about Chickamauga
-More conditioning for me physically for Wauhatchie
                            -More about fieldcraft
                            -Good times seeing good friends

That, in and of itself, makes it all worthwhile.

See you all in the field!

I can say from the perspective of the battlefield park service artillery programs we were doing at Tour Stop 7, as well as the spectators in attendance there...you boys looked great and sounded awesome doing the Rebel Yell coming and thru the woods on Sunday morning. Numbers were lighter than I might have expected, but this seems to be an undeniable trend. I don't think it was unique to this event, put it that way.

The Stones River and Kennesaw crew had a mildly unpleasant experience with local law enforcement that apparently came out to the battlefield to answer a call from some member of public late Saturday night complaining about a campfire in the park. We were awakened by a flashlight shined in our face and a belligerent county cop claiming we were trespassing. He said he has been patrolling Chickamauga since 1992 and never encountered people bivouacking there, which was strange because we do artillery programs out there annually and always camp with a fire for cooking without incident. Fortunately, before things got any more out of hand, STRI park ranger Jim Lewis showed him his identification and pointed out the US Government truck and trailer (for the artillery piece) parked nearby.

Good event at CHCH though (other than that) and heard lots of compliments about the 23rd TN infantry programs you boys were doing all weekend. Kudos raising $1400, too. Tip o' the hat, gentlemen. Nicely done.

Johnny and Craig, thank you both for your kind words. This whole program was deffenitly a labor of love.
The monuments in Atlanta required over $190,000. I hope we were able to make some sort of impact of it.
