  • UPDATE: Warlike Along the Rapidan

In our efforts to recreate the individual soldier's condition, it is easy to overlook the enormity of army logistics that were integral to their wartime experience. Even a small Confederate regiment in 1864, dealing with the smallest transportation allowance it had ever been afforded, fielded upwards of two dozen horses and mules--from the government animals pulling the headquarters and skillet wagons, to the private horses of officers, to the personal horses of several enlisted infantrymen who were paid an extra 40 cents per day to serve as orderlies. The 13th Virginia required nearly 600 pounds of hay and grain for its animals each day. At WARLIKE Along the Rapidan, participants will be immersed in army life, to include the sights, sounds, and smells of an infantry regiment's full compliment of animals. And don't think we have easy kit requirements for the horses either! Your event organizers are busy preparing the piles of Richmond harness and tack necessary to do it right.
