  • Averasboro Battlefield Museum and Hunley Model

A full-sized replica of the CSS H.L. Hunley, a Civil War submarine, will come to the Averasboro Battlefield Museum Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Also, a Civil War Christmas will be portrayed by various living history persons on thebattlefield during the same days.

The H.L. Hunley Mobile Exhibit, a full-sized replica of the original, was built in the spring and summer of 2004 by John Dangerfield and Holton Cutler with the help of 15 volunteers.
The original CSS H.L. Hunley was the forerunner of the modern submarines, and did sink the Union ship, USS Housatonic. The Hunley demonstrated both the advantagesand disadvantages of undersea warfare, as, after the successful sinking of the Housatonic and before its crew returned it to port in Charleston, the submarine sank losing all eight crew members aboard.

During the experimental phase of the Hunley, its inventor and person for whom it was named, Horace Lawson Hunley, was lost aboard an unsuccessful test of its capability.

The original CSS H. L. Hunley, located below the sea in 1995, was brought to the surface, and is currently being prepared for preservation at a museum in Charleston.

The exhibit is open to the public.

A parking fee of $5 per vehicle will be charged to offset expenses and to support projects of the Averasboro Museum.

The Averasboro Battlefield Museum is located just north of Godwin and just south of Dunn/Erwin at 3300 N.C. 82. The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. all three days.

Reservations for school group viewings on Friday may be made by calling the between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at number 891-5019.

For additional information regarding the exhibit, call Benny Pearce at (910) 483-0768 or emailbpearce7@nc.rr.com.
