  • Border Ruffians - Real or Studio Props

Being out in the territories, things are a little different. I was browsing though some old photographs, and I noticed some border ruffians. They had swords in their hands (which I assume are just studio props), but I noticed that they were well-armed with revolvers. And what I really noticed is that they seem to have belts on under their coat. And those look to be military belts. One also has a visible cap pouch.

The image in question is at the LOC.

So here is my question: was that heard of for this side of the Mississippi, for civilians to be wearing that under their coats while doing nefarious deeds? Or, like the swords, were the military belts and cap pouches just studio props for non-ruffians trying to look tough for a dramatic photograph?
