,69 Caliber Bayonet and scabbard supplier

Hi All.....I'm trying to get ready for Boonville(June 16 weekend) and Manassas and , as of yet, I can't post in the Wanted to Buy section, so I thought I'd try here as I don't know how long it takes to have total access to the site and I'm running out of time....here is my dilema.
I have a reproduction Armisport 1842 Musket and a reproduction bayonet I paid a boat load of money for several years ago, maybe 2003-4(It is unmarked, but its dimensions are :
Blade: little over 17 inches
Barrel Tube: little over 4 inches
...and now here is the rub.......the base of the bayonet blade attached to the shank(the widest part) is 1 1/4 inches.)
A while back (before finding this site so don't beat me up here...I've been "saved")I bought a .69 Caliber scabbard, early war 2 rivet from Blockade Runner, because of the width of the blade at the base, it barely makes it halfway down into the scabbard. (I also tried a nice repro 1861 Springfield bayonet in the same scabbard , and it went in with about 3/4 of an inch of the blade still showing....neither was "flush")

Bottom line, before I go to Boonville in mid June, I need proper bayonet otr scabbard or both....anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Mike Boyd

FWIW, I'd try Missouri Boot & Shoe, but I would call or e-mail to find out if he has to make one up or has one in stock. I haven't bought any leather gear from Robert since the old daze, but his stuff was great then, and I see no reason why it wouldn't still be the same now.

Hi Warren, I'm just wondering if the bayonet itself is "too wide" at the base of the blade to start with to fit any .69 scabbard. As I have Brown Bess, Charleyville and several other Flintlocks with bayonets, this .69 bayonet looks like the Bess ones, real wide at the base of the blade. I'm pretty sure I'll need a better scabbard(the Springfield bayonet test proved that), but I wish someone could give me that "base blade width" on a good .69 cal bayonet, I think that will tell the tale, Thanks, Mike Boyd

Well, do you want me to measure the base of the bayonet blade for my M1816/1822 for you?

It measures 7/8ths of an inch or 22mm.

Thanks Warren, I appreciate that..............So, the bayonet must go as well.Any particular supplier out there that sells a real authentic 1842 bayonet that will fit the Armisport brand 42 musket? Thanks, Mike Boyd

Duvall Leatherworks comes to mind though there are others.
Check his 1828 scabbard.

The repro bayonet for the M1842 Springfield seems to be the Italian made and is available from Taylor or most of the sutlers selling the M1842.
Others may offer advice on reputable sources for originals.
A number of the readily available .58 cal musket bayonets reproductions are not Italian made and is reflected in the pricing.

You could stalk the site College Hill Arsenal which is one of the AC approved vendors here. Mr. Prince sells originals and I just recently bought an original M1842 bayonet. It fits like a glove onto my Armisport 42.
I checked that site about 2 times a day in order to get first dibs on original bayonets. He put out an announcement on his site about acquiring a good batch of Civil War bayonets. From what I've heard, the really good repro M1842 bayonets cost as much as originals nowadays.

My original bayonet has a width of slightly over 3/4 in. and a circumference of 2 in. The scabbard that I use for it is from Missouri Boot and Shoe which fits it perfectly. I originally ordered the scabbard for my Armisport Enfield repro bayonet but it also fits my original 42 bayonet. I know that MO Boot and Shoe will custom fit the scabbard to your bayonet if you send in the bayonet and pay extra but I don't think you'll get that in time for Bull Run. Nor do I think you'll get a generic scabbard in time from them considering there are probably other orders in front of any that you'll place, especially mine since I ordered some accoutrements from them today. Either way, good luck. If you don't care about the scabbard and are going to replace it anyways maybe you can try soaking it in water to get it more flexible then put the bayonet inside it so it would conform and dry according to your bayonet. That's what I would do with a scabbard I was planning on getting rid of along with a junky bayonet that I would be getting rid of also.
