    Neill,
I’m surprised that your horse did not protest at having a “Yankee” blanket on her back.

I just picked up one from the post office this morning. I won a little money at the casino so I had to get it. It looks great! I couldn’t be happier and would highly recommend the blanket to anyone. It is now listed on their website. I ordered it on Sunday night and they had it in the mail by noon the next day.

Is the nap slightly raised or is it unfinished?

Re: New Federal Issue Blanket by Tim Sheads, S&S Sutler

I had purchased one of these blankets a couple of months ago and the the opportunity to finally use it this weekend. This is the best blanket that I have ever purchased or used. The blanket is well worth the money and it was even mentioned that new members of my regiment should consider it.

                    Cheers,

My question has not been answered yet. Is the nap raised or is the blanket unfinished like nost other repro blankets?

I spent a little while talking to Tim about these blankets not too long ago. The blankets were woven by FHW and shipped to Tim unfinished and uncut. They are huge--we're talking somewhere in the range of 100"+ x 80"+ and quite loosely woven. Tim washes and shrinks the blankets down to near regulation size, which tightens the weave and raises the nap quite considerably. They end up being larger, thicker, and warmer than most other reproduction blankets out there.

                          Hello,
So in your opinion, yes or no, this is the best reproduction out there. I just want to make sure. I recently purchased a few items from S and S sutler and was not dissapointed. Good job.

I'll try to answer some questions about this. Although I own 11 different blankets, I'm not a knowledgeable as say Mr. Woodburn. Having said that, I understand where some are curious.

Jan - I wouldn't say the nap is raised. Yes it is put in a water bath to tighten the weave, but isn't brushed to raise the nap. I would say this blanket is still scratchy. In comparison, the CC Danish Exchange blanket has 2 different versions. I own the more-prevelant "softer" one with a raised nap, it is quite soft compared to the S&S blanket.

James - Is this the best reproduction out there? I think this is a "difference of opinion". What one person may look for, another may not. It compares favorably to originals I have seen. In my own personal opinion, it is the most authentic blanket available to buy new right now. It even has the correct selvage (return edge, not "tucked"). And yes I happily own one.

I had the honor of seeing his prototype from FHW 2 years ago when I was in Gettysburg. I compared it to the NPS blanket from years ago, and I would buy his in a heartbeat. I do not think anyone who buys this "sight unseen" would be disappointed.

I hope this helps and doesn't anger one of the Mods. I don't want to enter into the abyss of "who makes the best", but this is just my $0.02 for what they're worth.

                                Hello,
I have recently looked at a few originals and can say that A: I do not know why I asked that question in the first place, as I could have answered that myself. and B: YES! This is a great reproduction and will definately be picking one up soon. I think this blanket and the one offered by NS are both close contenders.
