  • Handguns in the ranks?

Now, I know that handguns were most common among cavalry, artillery crews, and officers, being an "issue" item in all three groups, but how common were handguns in the rank-and-file of the Union infantry? I mean, I've read about how some soldiers brought them from home or were sent by the folks at home in a "care package", and seen old photos of soldiers with handguns (including my great-great-grandfather), though I'm sure a lot of those were photographers' props, but what, if anything, did official regulations have to say about the average soldier carrying a handgun?
