I'm in the process of gathering materials to make a late war Depaartment of Alabama style jacket. The collar is supposed to be 'dark blue' wool jeans, but I can't find anyone who currently makes it. I could dye some myself, but never done that before. Any ideas?

Re: Source for dark blue wool jeanscloth
I've looked at the jacket in Confederate Memorial Hall several times. I would call the fabric blue wool on a brown cotton warp. I believe KC MacDonald has some good info on this on the Lazy Jacks website. I'd check that out.

Re: Source for dark blue wool jeanscloth
Yes, though much diminished from the original huge bolt we still have 50 or so yards left of the FHW blue-gray on brown jean. Should be enough to make collars for around 2,500 Department of Alabama jackets.

Which is not for sale to the general public and precisely why I have not advertised it in the several years I've had it. But hey, that's only another dozen emails I'll have to respond to saying "no, I'm not selling that material." I have plenty of free time for that sort of thing. Thanks Brian!Dan Wambaugh

Re: Source for dark blue wool jeanscloth
N****** S****** (name omitted to protect the innocent) used to have some of that material too at one time, and the swatch sample I still have is very nice! It is navy wool on a brown cotton warp. Besides the other fine gents, you could always try contacting him too- don't think you can go wrong with any of them. Good luck.Rich Croxton

Re: Source for dark blue wool jeanscloth
My business partner is right about the jean cloth, but I guess I was wrong about trying to help him move it off the shelf.
NJS apparently had some custom woven.. Buy it from him.Brian White

Re: Source for dark blue wool jeanscloth
Brian (or is it Dan? No, wait, it's Brian... yeah, that's right) makes a good point. It may indeed have been custom run thing. Said swatch is a few years old now, so I would not know, but you can always try and see.....Originally posted by GreencoatCross View PostNJS apparently had some custom woven.. Re: Source for dark blue wool jeanscloth
Woolrich has an excellent dark blue on brown cotton warp jean. I have a pair of trousers made from it that I wore at Athens last year. It's actually good cloth.
