  • Cloth covered CS drum canteen

I have come across some great brown material for my canteens, but was wondering how prevalent covered drum canteens were. Most drum canteens I see at events have no covers, but there are existing examples that do. I typically use my drum for AoT early to mid war impression.

I once thought the some thing too, but there are LOTS of examples of covered drum canteens out there. Look at" Echos Of Glory" the csa book, and you'll find some examples . There was ...were...several posts last year here on the AC with great photos too , to look up in the arcives. plm

To echo what Mr. Muller stated. I know of at least three original drum canteens (covered) housed in different institutions/collections. There are also a decent amount of photos showing the canteens covered (I have attached one of a Florida Confederate). There does seem to be more photographs of uncovered drum canteens, therefore and assumption being that they were more prevalent. This however is an assumption and would be very difficult to prove.

      All the best,

Here's a few examples. I don't remember all the sources, however.

Here are some more photos of originals as well as my reproduction (first photo). The three originals are all different canteens despite having similar covers and straps. My reproduction is covered with a scrap of the Gettysburg CS blanket that Dan Wambaugh offered several years ago, and has a strap made from cotton webbing supplied to us by Family Heirloom Weavers.

The photos of originals come from various auction and dealer websites but are not identified to any particular soldier. The covered canteen with black leather strap in a photo posted earlier in the thread was used by Pvt. John Speck, 39th Battalion VA Cavalry (Scouts, Guides, & Couriers).

Some of these look familiar. Jim, the material I have looks a lot like the image you posted (color-wise) but a little less rough texture. I'll post a few pics when I complete the project.

The material may not have been so rough when new. I have a smoothside canteen that appears to be covered with burlap but may have been covered with wool using lots of shoddy which has fallen out over the years.

Here is another courtesy of The Horse Soldier. Like several examples posted earlier in this thread, it's covered with wool but of a finer quality.

Thats very interesting, I may have to put a cover on mine, I don't know if I've ever seen someone at an event with that.

When I got my drum canteen last year , I asked the same question about covering it. It only makes godd common sence to cover the tin to help keep the contents cooler. I never understood why most artist potray these canteens as uncovered.Surly those ole boys had the same notion about keeping the sun from heating up his water. Just thinkin out loud with my fingers plm

It seems that a lot of Confederate drum canteens were issued without covers. I wonder if there are any existing examples or descriptions of field improvised or home made canteen covers?
