Belts instead of Suspenders

I've done some reading and from what I've gathered Belts, in the place of suspenders, became popular mid war. I wear a belt often, just do to the fact that it is more comfortable. I also still read things that suggest they were hardly worn among the ranks of soldiers. Any thoughts on the appropriateness of belts?

IMHO, just the usual PEC Caveat: don't make the exceptions the rule.

Popular, as in a fashion trend. I know the 19th Century was a time very focused on the latest fashion trend. But popular, as in soldiers started to wear them because they lasted longer than suspenders and were practical. I have read a few books with photos of all sorts of belts and home made braces, including cartridge box slings, leather canteen slings, standard roller buckle. I have issues finding pictures of federal soldiers wearing them though.
