  • Question Regarding an Elite Unit: The CSBCSS

A question for my the experts here. I understand that during the Peninsula Campaign the Confederates, in response to Professor Lowe's Balloon Corps, actually raised their own lighter-than-air craft, constructed of multicolored petticoat fabric.

Further research indicates that they briefly considering air to air combat as well, with observers accompanied in some cases by Balloon Corps Sharpshooters.

Documents suggest the CSBCSS were armed with Whitworth rifles and, for camouflage, dazzle pattern clothing imported from England and originally intended for Australian convicts.

I think they looked like these, but instead of forage caps the men were given ladies' sun bonnets to help their aim. Can any of you experts help me with more details?

You are correct on most particulars except they never saw action. Joe Johnston had them burned when it was reported federals had approached within 30 miles.
