    The photo of the dead CS infantryman in Ft. Mahone (1865) shows him with US leathers (plate still on cartridge box), and model 1862 canteen with leather strap.

      Petersburg pic

      It is difficult to tell if the leather strap in the picture is a split strap or the common single strap. If it is split, there is enough photographic evidence to suggest that split strap slings may be CS issue.

      Has anyone ever seen a Union picture with the split type of leather strap used on the canteen?
