This from a 2nd US Infantry Regular in 1855.
page 65, para. 2 "Ten Years in the Ranks U.S. Army" Augustus Meyers. Stirling Press, NY, 1914.
[yes, he's writing about a soldier's life relying on 50 years later recall....careful, his written 'facts' are very accurate]
There is another reference to common tents later on....."A" tents....
and one reference to "A-shaped" tents during a lengthy discussion of an early 1862 issuance of shelter halves. (Augustus whines about the leaky dog tents, volunteer regiments used their leakproof rubber blankets although hot in direct sunlight, Regulars hadn't been issued these yet).
Having been told in May 1998 by some of our premier researchers in the 33rd Wisconsin that these weren't A frames, references to Swiss Ski Chalet architecture wasn't correct, and these Must be called common or wedge tents......
Is it still wrong to call these "A" tents, or A-shaped tents?
