  • Two TN Rebels Killed 1865 After War Question

    Good day all,
I don't know if anyone here can answer this question, but here goes.

3 weeks ago I came across a scanned newspaper article online and I think it was from 1976. I thought I bookmarked it, but now I can't find it, so I guess I didn't. Anyway, the story goes it was 1865 after the war in Tennessee, two rebels were returning home and were almost back-I think they were both 19 or so and the newspaper had their names so they were known. They stayed at a doctor's house, but he was concerned about them because if he was found with them in his house he would be punished, so he let them stay in the barn and he left that night to go elsewhere. The next day, they were found by union cavalry and they were tied to trees, tortured and killed. When the doctor found out he felt it was his fault. He and an ex-slave buried them and for the rest of his life the ex-slave looked after their graves and he built bricks and put around them.

This story has bothered me and I wanted to find out more about it. The article showed a picture of their graves and it is still on private property. Now I can't find the artilcle, but if anyone of you know this story, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Gregg Jennings

Very sad. Not too uncommon an occurrance I'm afraid.
