Kevin O'Bierne posted a US regulation that stated a regiment was alloted 1 Drum Major (Band Leader) and up to 24 bandsmen (there are three pay grades for the bandsmen), and two Principal Musicians, one preferably to be a Chief Bugler, the other to be the Fife and Drum Corps leader. My point was that there would be only two PM/Band Leader types, one for the Fife and Drums, the Other for the Band....and their position on the field was specified in Hardees's Gilham's Scott's Casey's, et al. Lincoln's two early calls for volunteers alloted 2 Principal Musicians maximum. I haven't seen an infantry regiment staff roster with 3 Principal Musicians/Band Leader/Drum Major/Fife Major/Chief Bugler on the rolls at any one time on any of the rosters I've ever read.
Something like 24 of 28 Regular Army Infantry Regiments had bands.... and 248 out of x00 volunteer regiments had bands. Then GO 191 KO'd the regimental bands, setting up brigade bands in their stead.
With me so far?
Cavalry Regiments were alloted 1 band leader, 17 musicians.....and 2 Chief Buglers in the 1861 Organization. The 4th Iowa Cavalry roster in fact names off the Band Leader.....and the two Chief Buglers. So I've got a strong feeling that if we went through more Cavalry units we would in fact find 3 PM types in many of the regiments (that had a mounted band).
Make Sense?
The Question:
Name me ANY Federal American Civil War Volunteer Infantry Regiment that had a Band Leader (105.50 per month) and two Principal Musicians ($21 / month) at the same time. April 1861 - July 1862 is your best bet.
Pure conjecture: I've got this sneaking suspicion that the Regulars might fit the bill nicely.
But the question is for VOLUNTEER Infantry Regiment's......3 years service..... Band Leader and two higher pay than a Private Principal Musician's. (Recall that Oliver Norton, Private (as in rifleman), was not paid as a Chief Bugler whilst serving as a mounted orderly/brigade bugler/guidon bearer for Strong Vincent).
To make this interesting....how about I donate to an ACW Preservation Cause of your choosing $1 for every regiment that you can come up with three PM Types?!!! Regiment, Rank, Name * 3 and the source.......
Thanks!!!
