Early Mass Soldier? (with earring!)

Here's a tintype of a soldier that my Dad gave me that's been in the family awhile. It's somewhat of a mystery, possibly early war Massachusetts Militia (they were issued 9000 cadet grey uniforms) or Confederate . Also the soldier is possibly wearing an earing which is very rare. Any thoughts? It's in hi-res so you can enlarge it quite a bit.
