  • Awesome close-ups of the 149th PA Infantry

i swear, these high res shots you can get off LOC are just downright spooky when you zoom in close.

This is Company D of the 149th PA Infantry from Warren's V Corps. These men are vets of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. Photo taken during Nov 64 at Petersburg.

Astounding! No chevrons on NCO just the sqaure for the first Sgt. and two more NCO belts in the line. Also mostly frocks but at least one sack coat.
thanks for posting this fine immmage!!

      Dear Sir,
Superb images, thank you! Interesting to observe the "farby" hat/cap decorations and cords.

        Hallo!

The mostly worn and worn-out hats and caps are wonderful!

And another "subdued" first sergeant with just the diamond on his private purchase coat with nice pockets.
        Newer hat too.

        Plus the worn cap boxes...

And some lads with the "factory" pre-slit, pre-punched shoulder belts.

on another interesting note, this is the 149th, the "bucktails" and I only see one guy (unless I'm missing it somehow) with a bucktail on his hat. Thats interesting to say the least. I'd have thought that they'd all still be wearing them at this point.

Hmmmm...I see at least 6 bucktails. I like the fact that they are still wearing their 1st Corps badges even though they have been in the 5th Corps for almost 7 months by this point.

Re: Awesome close-ups of the 149th PA Infantry

There was a recent thread on this forum about subdued rank. It left me wondering what those below the rank of orderly did about it. The answer, at least in this image is: nothing. A belt buckle would be the only indication of a noncommisioned rank. Sure makes practical sense.

Also, I counted 5 forage caps out of 32 enlisted men. There also seem to be 3 dress hats, one for sure. This goes against the grain of accepted knowledge about what AoP soldiers wore.

              Wonderful images. Keep them coming.

A couple people mentioned about NCO rank. There is a solder wearing Corporal chevrons. He is sitting down, second from right on the full pic.

                Thanks for sharing.

I see two more Sackcoats, I think , look at the sitting men, number 3 and 4 counted from right to left seem to wear Sackoats too.

A very intersesting image, thanks for posting ! Echt genial!

A significant number of the men that are wearing frocks have the collars folded down. I counted 13 total wearing frocks with their collars folded down.

just because they were issued and common day " this is how they did it things " goes out the window. I am sure that some even labeled their collars too. But I only counted 3 of them that were not wearing a frock.

The guy standing fourth from the left in the front row definitely seems to be working on some chaw, or else he's just funny looking.

Brandon, good catch on the corporal chevrons. It seems clear that they are the same color as the coat he's wearing. I don't recall that practice being mentioned in the previous subdued rank thread, but I think it's very interesting. The orderly's diamond is also the same color as his coat.
