  • Cool Image on Ebay

I spotted this image a few minutes ago on Ebay, and thought I would share, as it is quite unique. I think it is a Confederate soldier wearing a U.S. waist belt as a cross-belt. Very neat image!

That's a nice one! Just saw it this morning. Interesting use of a US plate on his shoulder belt, I can't recall seeing that method before. I have a feeling that he may be an early war Federal state volunteer or militiaman. Plenty of early New England and western volunteer uniforms were gray.

I'm not so sure that is a US belt plate he is using...the oval is way too narrow. Wish I could see it in higher magnification, but it looks to me to be a state seal of some sort.

But that kepi...shaped like a modern sutler's row creation. Yipes!

Here is the image flipped to "right read." Definitely a US plate.

It does have a US-ish look to it. But the space between the two "letters" has a higher degree of detail that suggests a figure with an outstretched arm. Perhaps a Massachusetts plate?

                  No, it's a U.S. Plate - here is a close-up:

I would suggest that this is a "US" cartridge box plate, rather than a belt plate.

Like Scott, I think its a cartridge box plate. What catches my eye is how lousy the cap is.
