  • Jeff. Davis & Gen. Hood photos on display in Atlanta

I am trying to spread the word about two important Civil War images that will be on display for a short period at an Atlanta auction house. They have been consigned for auction from a private collector and will almost certainly find their way into another private collection. This may be the only chance for the public to view the two images, and may be of interest to this forum.

The first is an ambrotype of Jefferson Davis c. 1855, which is believed to be a reproduction of an earlier daguerreotype c. 1845. The ambrotype shows a clean-shaven, middle-aged Jefferson Davis during his tenure as U.S. Senator for the state of Mississippi before the onset of the Civil War. Image link: http://bit.ly/1qa3nG7

The second is a tintype of Confederate General John Bell Hood. Hood received his command at the age of 33, making him the youngest man to lead an army on either side of the Civil War. The tintype, which has some losses to the image, was likely made after the end of the Civil War. Image at this link: http://bit.ly/1pSA1ft

Both photographs will be on view to the public at Peachtree and Bennett’s showroom in the Atlanta Expo Center between 10am and 5pm from Wednesday, April 6 through Saturday, April 9 before being auctioned off on April 9. For more details, please visit www.peachtreebennett.com
