  • Photos from the New York State Military Museum

For those not aware, this great museum in Saratoga Springs has a large collection of Civil War CDVs. I believe many of these were numbered and pinned up for display in the state capitol. Unfortunately I didn't have the foresight to note the names and regiments of most individuals.

First up is one of my favorites. As I recall, this is a colonel who escaped from a rebel prison and seems to have been given or purchased enlisted clothing. He has what looks like a Hardee hat and a knit sack coat.Click image for larger version

There are hundreds more; you can find them on Ancestry and the New York State Military Museum website.

Great stuff, Will, and thanks for posting.

An excellent resource for those researching for Wauhatchie, too!

As you mentioned Wauhatchie, I'll include one whose name I did note, Sylvester Edwards of the 149th New York.

The New York State Military Museum really is a neat place to visit. All sorts of cool original CW artifacts. I think one of my favorites in the exhibit was a captured knife, originally carried by someone in the Louisiana Tigers.

They've been a big help and a wealth of information as I've been researching my great (x3) grandfather's regiment.
