  • Foster Home?

Well, actually the HQ of Union Gen. Robert Foster. This photo is remarkable only for the fine specimen of Zouavus Keystonus visible pulling guard duty in the background. This member of the 76th Pennsylvania is wearing the very attractive and distinctive "Keystone Zouave" uniform, with integral vest. An 1864 photo from the LOC collection.

As [one of our cavalry] passed by, the general halted him and inquired "what part of the army he belonged to." "I don't belong to the army, I belong to the cavalry." "That's a fact," says [the general], "you can pass on." Silas Grisamore, 18th Louisiana

A fine example of a Civil War "moving picture." Lots of movement going on there. Looks like the horse moved, then the horse-holder reacted, and the zouave involuntarily turns his head to look. The Brian Pohanka look-alike on the right remains mostly unfazed, but he also moved his head slightly. Perhaps an unexpected cannon blast from the artillery camp stirred them out of the photographer's spell during the exposure.
