  • NY Infantry

I foud this photo that I thought had several interesting points to it.

Notes on the web site I found it on where as follows:

Brownell, Francis E., Pvt. 11th New York Infantry, U.S.A.

11th N. Y. Infantry; Killed Jackson, Keeper of Marshall House in Alexandria, VA.

I have linked a tif image here that you can zoom in on:
    http://www.forrestsescort.com/images/NY_soilder.tif
I found all the medals on his chest interesting. One looks simular to the combat one of today.

I also wanted to link to another post on the AC that I thought is a useful tool when looking at old photos. All the old pros here probly know the colors by heart, but every now and then you will find that there are few of us still on the learning curve.

Detailed analysis of the Brownell photo, as it pertained to our research for the Fire Zouaves, is here: http://www.myrtle-avenue.com/firezou/impression.html

His "medals," as this pre-dates his receipt of the MOH, are a combination of fire badges (his own from Troy, NY and at least two others, including one from NYC) and "for offing the jerk who extinguished the flame of our beloved Ellsworth, please accept this miniature Springfield we got you at the Wax Museum" presentation pins. People LOVED giving the Fire Zouaves free tokens of esteem, and Brownell's overnight celebrity status made him the recipient of more than his share.

        Re: NY Infantry

Thanks for the link, nice info. I had come across this image in the Library of Congress today and thought the rifle badge was interesting. I was a day late and a dollar short. go figure.
