    Here's a photo I found online with provenance to the Mass 34th Inf. It's a pretty candid image of mealtime.

    A very nice image. The older faces in the group gave me pause for a few seconds. I wondered if I was looking at a actual period photograph or a modern group of reenactors. The light blue tinting on the trousers is also interesting.

        The begging dogs in the picture fit with this: "...the 34th Massachusetts Infantry had an 'army of dogs.' Some of the 34th's dogs were no more than wild animals always staying out of camp until dark and then sneaking in to the cook hosue when no one was near. Others became tame and would regularly fall in with the company." From http://www.floridareenactorsonline.com/mascots.htm , no citation unfortunately.
