  • 1st Texas Hvy. Artillery

    Ebay item: 3238095048

"Sixth plate ambrotype....of Private George H. Adams of Company A, 1st Regiment (Cook's) Heavy Artillery, C.S.A. This unit was headquartered in Galveston, Texas and served at various duty stations there and nearby."

This photo is one of great importance and value to the Trans-Miss researcher/material culture junkie, as it shows what appears to be a Houston produced enlisted frock. Wharton issued blue-gray kersey frocks to the men of the 1st Texas Hvy. Arty Battery at Galveston in 1863. Note the similarites between Wharton's own description of the "Houston" shell jacket, Merrick's wartime drawings of the same, and the frock pictured.
