    Gents,
I'm making a 5th Texas Battle Flag for our LH in G-Burg in Aug. Question? Does anyone know what was painted on the blue streamer atop the flag poll of the 5th Texas. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Don Troiani's painting of the 5th Texas on Little Round Top shows the streamer but it is partially obscured by the flag. It looks like "T****SAT VINCERE" There's probably more to it.

    Thanks for your help!

    Re: Streamer

    Art,
I am unsure what is on the streamer. I can not find an image that I can see large enough. Could it be the common phrase of: "Vivere Sat Vincere" "To live is conquering enough"? That blue streamer followed those boys for a while, if I am not mistaken.
    Just my thoughts.

You might want to contact the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA, they have the late Howard Madaus' flag research, and Howie had a detailed worksheet for every known CS Flag, and would have details on that streamer.

        Lee,
you mind posting that contact info for the rest of us folk? I've been wanting to get a cut sheet on the 1st and 4th Stainless Banner now that it is recovered and back in Tallahassee.

            Gents,
Thanks for the info on the streamer. I'll keep hunting till I come up with something solid.
" Vivere Sat Vincere" is a good start!

                Art,

It is good to know that I actually have some knowledge in regard to history, albeit latin!

I am also glad that this helped you out.

                Cheers,

                  Hallo!

The actual 5th Texas battle flag's streamer was 4 inches wide by 57 1/4 inches long, made of dark blue cotton with a 1/4 inch white border.

On the obverse: 1 3/4 inch high embroidered white letters "VIVERE SAT VINCERE" (includes parenthesis).

On the reverse: 3 1/2 inch tall letters and a fat white star 5 REG (star) VOL a total of all three 13 inches long.

This flag was in the North South Trader magazine and showed the streamer. I am not sure what date it was . My wife bought a pile of these old magazines and it was on the top of the pile last night. The streamer words are correct to what every one has said .

Just let us know and we'll save you a spot.

Curt is absolutely correct. I talked to a lady at the TX archive a couple weeks ago about this same flag. Notice that the lettering and such are embroidered not painted. I have a fellow in my unit wanting me to make a repro for him with out the streamer (thank God since I don't know how to embroider, yet)

                          Re: Streamer

This will be a time-consuming project - best of luck! (When we portrayed the 5th Texas at the 125th Gettysburg, we didn't embroider the streamer - just used paint - we couldn't find anyone who could do all that embroidery in time, or who wouldn't charge an arm and a leg!).

All of the lettering is embroidered, both sides. The 5 REG VOL on the reverse is embroidered in white with red chain stitched borders to all letters, and each point of the silk star has a letter from TEXAS (starting at the top point and proceeding clockwise), also in red chain stitching.

The streamer border was also white silk.

Show us a photo when it's finished!

                            Gents,
I have the specs for the streamer (cravat) and the specs for the flag from Greg. The streamer will be embroidered to specs to every detail. It definitely helps being and artist! I have until Aug. to complete this project so I have plenty of time. ( Tic Tic ) When it's complete I'll post the pix in detail. You gentleman really came through for me this time. This is a great web site and I'm proud to be a part of it, and this hobby.

                            Thanks for all your help!

                              Hallo!

Once Upon a Time, in 1989, we made the march/approach of the Texas Brigade from the "tavern" to the wall of rocks on Little Round Top.

The nice thing now, is that the "deforestation" efforts behind and on Houck's Ridge, as well as the base of Big Round Top make it "more interesting."

                              Curt

(A nice about the 5th Texas flag other than its streamer was the fact that it did not have a border. One could tell where the 5th was in the line by its "more unique" flag.)
