    Hello boys,

Was wanting to know what brands of cigars would be the best for the period? Thanks.

Marsh Wheelings are the best answer. They date back to the 1840s,so they should work. And they are not bad for the price.

      Matt,

What do you have as a mental picture of a period cigar?
There are several type/sizes available today that you could choose from that may or may not be more appropreate depending on what you like, and fit into your idea of your social class.
Just a thought on my part.

I hope you don't plan on smoking any of those stinky things near me at Backwaters there Mr. Bullfrog. :confused_

No I don't plan too. Just bringin' my ol' pipe :teeth_smi!

Well, I really like Marsh Wheelings, but thought if there were any other brands to choose from. I'm not picky. I like any kind of cigar. Was wanting to have a cigar for doing a civilian impression, because I was planning on starting on one.

          Thanks fellas,

Well you really need to be thinking in terms of machine made cigars vs hand made cigars. Just because a Marsh Wheeling gives off what some of us think is a "period cigar" doesn't mean it's true. There are shapes and sizes available in a modern cigar shop (A GOOD ONE-NOT A HUMIDOR IN A LIQUOR STORE!) that are period correct. Takes some digging and some research, but you can turn it up.

If you should choose to have Marsh Wheeling cigars available, do not show them in the box they are packed in. It's dated from the 1930's

                    Re: Cigars that are period

The Arabia had one basic type of cigar that was the majority of the tobacco they found on the ship. It was a close brother to the backwoods that come in the foil packages today. The way they were packed is what makes this of special note. Some were packed in little cigar boxes of hardwood sheathing and others were packed wagon spoke style in a small keg or barrel similar to that of a nail or beer keg.

I am with Landrum on this one. It is not the brand you are seeking
but the shape and style of the cigar. A good tobacconist should be
able to steer you in the right direction.
